Our History

From Waiuku to Puni

Sunset Coast BMX first began in Waiuku, built by local riders and families who wanted a place to race and belong. As the club grew, so did the need for a purpose-built facility. In 2007, the move was made to Puni, with the first dirt turned in 2008 and racing beginning in early 2010.

Milestones Along the Way

  • 2010: Hosted our first BMXNZ National Championships.
  • 2010 onwards: Used by BMXNZ for development camps, clinics, and test training.
  • 2013: Hosted the Oceania Championships, welcoming riders from across the Pacific.
  • 2014: Proud hosts of the North Island Titles.
  • 2016: Hosted the BMXNZ National Championships once again.

Our Track

The Sunset Coast track has welcomed riders of all levels — from first-time striders to national champions. For many years the facility included both 5m and 8m start ramps, allowing us to host international-standard racing. Today, our 5m ramp and track layout continue to provide a strong foundation for riders to develop their skills and enjoy BMX in a supportive community environment.

More Than Racing

Sunset Coast has always been about more than just the track. We’re a club built on volunteers and families, where riders of all ages and abilities are welcome. From balance bikes through to masters riders, BMX at Sunset Coast is truly a family sport.

We’re proud to support new riders with free trial sessions and opportunities to learn the basics in a safe and encouraging environment.

Looking Ahead

We are proud of the journey that has brought us here, grateful for the support of our community, and excited for the future — including the chance to again welcome riders from all over New Zealand to the 2027 BMXNZ National Championships.
